The increasing requirement for protection against corrosion and freezing along with the growing automobile fleet in the country is projected to have a strong impact on China coolant market. In addition, the continuous investment for the development of efficient, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and low toxic coolant with extended shelf life by various manufacturers will positively affect the growth over the coming years.
Increasing demand for SUV’s and commercial vehicle coupled with the rising disposable income is expected to further fuel the automotive market which in turn will increase the demand for coolants.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in 2017, vehicle sale increased by 3.0% compared to the preceding year, reaching a total of 28.88 million vehicles. The sale of passenger cars increased by 1.4% to 24.72 million units, whereas, commercial vehicle sale increased by 14.0% to reach 4.16 million units.
Over the past few years, the automakers of the developed countries including, Germany, UK, France, and Italy have been shifting their manufacturing facilities to China on account of easy access to raw materials including steel and plastics and the low-cost workforce. For instance, in July 2018, BMW AG announced plans to expand production capacity at two production plants located in China.
The Germany-based BMW has signed an agreement with Chinese firm Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings to expand their joint venture to boost the annual production capacity to 520,000 units from two manufacturing facilities located in China by the end of 2019. In addition, Audi AG has acquired 1.0% stake in SAIC Volkswagen to expand its presence in the country.
The strong foothold of manufacturing units in equipment & machinery, building & construction, metal, and electric goods sectors in China is expected to maintain significant buyer pool for coolants.
Aerospace is a key market for coolant demand. Over the past few years, the aerospace industry in China has been witnessing significant gains on account of supportive investment-friendly policies in aviation sector along with increased movement in cargo fleets on a domestic level. All the space agencies in the country were government sponsored, however, many commercial start-ups have also joined over time.
As of 2017, seventeen Chinese aerospace companies received a total investment of USD 308.6 million. As per estimates, by the end of 2018, four Chinese aerospace companies received funding of 100 to 200 million yuan (USD 14.50 million to USD 29.65 million).
The commercial aerospace industry is capable of producing cost-effective and market-friendly spaceflight products. At the end of 2017, three-quarters of the global production value in the aerospace industry were accounted from commercial aerospace companies.
Increasing spending by the government of China on R&D in the aerospace industry as a result of the implementation of the 13th five-year plan for national science and technology talent development (2016-20) is projected to fuel coolant demand.
China antifreeze market is highly fragmented with the presence of a large number of players. Majority of the coolant consumed in China is produced by domestic manufacturers, while foreign manufacturers are also active in the market. The majority of players are investing in R&D in order to develop low toxic and environment-friendly products. Manufacturers are also focusing on increasing their manufacturing capacity to gain market share. Some of the players operating in the market are BASF SE, Arteco, Cummins Filtration, Bluestar (Beijing) Chemical Machinery Co.Ltd, and CCI Corporation.
